I International competition for young pianists
DENIS MATSUEV Artistic director of the Competition
The I International Competition for Young Pianists “Grand Piano Competition” has come to a close; the closing ceremony took place on May 5 at the Great Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory. The previous day Denis Matsuev had announced seven laureates and yesterday he named two Grand prix winners. The prizes went to Alexander Malofeev (Russia) and Sandro Nebieridze (Georgia).
The Awards Ceremony and the Gala Concert became a real feast for classical music lovers. The evening was opened by the Horn Orchestra of Russia conducted by its Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sergei Polyanichko. This unique band from St. Peterburg accompanied the Laureates and Prize-Winners Awards Ceremony; the host of the ceremony was the Competition Artistic Director Denis Matsuev. Each of the contestants – 8 prize-winners and 7 laureates – were awarded special prizes, including the opportunity to participate in projects and festivals organized by Denis Matsuev, Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Fedoseev, Yuri Bashmet, Alexander Sladkovsky, the Moscow Philarmonic Society to mention a few.
“The young musicians who came on the stage of the Great and Rachmaninov Halls of the Conservatory are unusually mature artists. Even now they are ready for serious performance. Each of them is a strong personality. The most important part of our competition is not the laureate title but the fact that all our musicians are incredible talents,” commented Denis Matsuev on the competition results.
The Laureates Gala Concert became in fact the third round of competition, with all seven laureates performing in the accompaniment of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra "Evgeny Svetlanov". As for Denis Matsuev, he played G. Gershvin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” in recital; Andrey Ivanov (double bass) and Aleksander Zinger (percussion) took part in this performance. The youngest musicians Aleksey Kardonov (tuba) and Rostislav Mudritski (accordion) accompanied by Denis Matsuev played Arban “Carnival of Venice”. And then the main event began: Grand prix winners announcement.
According to the decision of the jury panel, two laureates were honoured with the grand award: Alexander Malofeev and Sandro Nebieridze. Each of them received a diploma from Denis Matsuev. Also, both musicians will get the grand award - Avant Grand Yamaha Hybrid Piano. One more instrument will be bought for the second winner.
